CNY Running

Central New York’s Most Complete Running Calendar

About Running in Central New York

Utica is located in upstate New York at about the geographic center of the state. Although we have long rough winters here, the running community is strong and dedicated. Our city boasts the nations largest 15K road race called the Boilermaker where more than 10,000 runners, including the world’s most elite runners, come each July. We are also the home of the National Long Distance Running Hall of Fame.
The CNY Running website is designed to be a fun and useful online interactive resource for Central New York area runners where they can find and post upcoming road races, and post news about local running. Do you have an area road race that you’d like posted on the race calendar? Post it here. Do you have a local running news article? Post it here. Feel free to link to our website and also use one of our banner links if you’d like.

The Utica Boilermaker

Whether it’s the live bands playing every mile along the race course, or it’s the 4 to 5 row deep cheering spectator-lined course, or it’s the 30,000 plus post-race party with free Saranac beer, or it’s the fireworks and F-16 post-race flyover, there is just something very special and very unique about the Utica Boilermaker Road Race. This Race is not only the crown jewel of the running season for central New York, it’s the largest 15K in the nation. In 2002, The Boilermaker road race was honored by the Road Runners Club of America by being voted one of the top twenty best road races in the country. Each July, runners from all over the world including the most elite athletes on the planet come to Utica, NY to run in the Boilermaker. The Boilermaker has a tranformative power on peoples lives. Whether it’s used as a source of motivation to get in shape or a summer center piece used to bring families together for an annual reunion, nobody finishing the Boilermaker is not either renewed, transformed, enriched, and extremely greatful for the awesome experience. Visit the Boilermaker’s official race website and register today!

Fast Facts

The National Distance Running Hall of Fame

The National Distance Running Hall of Fame was established in Utica, NY in 1998 to honor the sport of distance running and the premier athletes in the field. Each year during Boilermaker weekend the Hall inducts a selected group of distance runners who have made outstanding contributions to the sport of distance running. Past inductees include Mary Decker Slaney, Steve Prefontaine, Alberto Salazar, Grete Waitz, Joan Benoit Samuelson, Frank Shorter, Kathrine Switzer, and one of Utica’s favorite people, Bill Rodgers a frequent Boilermaker runner. Bill writes in his own blog, “July 11th I raced an old favorite of mine and for thousands (ten to be close!) the Utica Boilermaker 15K in 53:10. This is a MAJOR RACE. Big in every way, from fan support along the course to the band at the finish to the competitive field.”
A stroll through the Hall of Fame is like taking a walk back in time. You will see all of the legends of the sports and much of their equipment and memorabilia on display. There are numerous pictorials, memorabilia displays, and award exhibits to read, reflect on, and learn from. Although a small city, Utica, N.Y. was selected because it is the home of The Boilermaker and has strong community support for the sport of running.

The Falling Leaves Road Race

The Falling Leaves road race presented by the Utica Road Runners is Utica’s oldest organized race, even older than the Boilermaker. This race is a fall classic for Utica. Usually occurring each year towards the end of September when the leaves have begun to change to red here in the Mohawk Valley. The race consists of a 5K and 14K distances with runner and wheel chair divisions.

The Utica Development Runs

The Utica Development Runs are a great spring and early summer race program presented by the Utica Road Runners. Each Wednesday evening around 6:30 PM at the Utica Parkway, hundreds of dedicated runners gather to run one of several races. There are several kid’s runs for all ages, a 2-mile run, and the classic 10K hilly run. The 10K meanders through the South Woods switchbacks and features a very challenging and hilly course. Utica Road Runner volunteers staff the race start, provide water at two locations along the route including the end, and setup a timer to record places and finishing times. Top area runners turn out each week and use this race for training for the Boilermaker.

America’s Greatest Heart Run & Walk

Just like most events in Utica, when we do it, we do it BIG. The Heart Run & Walk is one of the largest fund raising events for the American Heart Association each year. Thousands of people turn out in the middle of winter to run, walk, and raise funds for the AHA. Each year the people of the Utica area raise over 1 million dollars for the American Heart Association. It’s a great time and fun is usually had by all. There are various distance runs associated with the event but the heartiest folks try the 18-mile run that starts way up in Barneveld, NY at the crack of dawn.

The Utica Roadrunner’s Club

Utica, NY is graced with a top-notch running club called the Utica RoadRunners. The group is very active year-round and has weekly events, monthly business meetings, and hosts a number of group runs. Additionally the club’s dedicated members organize and manage a number of seasonal runs including the Utica Development Runs. Their members are vital to the success of running in Utica. They state on their website that they are a diverse group of over 400 people that promote health and fitness through running as well as many other activities. All ages and paces are welcome to join. Visit the link below to find out more and join.

National Distance Running Hall of Fame Half Marathon & 5K
Distance: Half Marathon
Time: 8:00 AM
Utica, NY
Race Notes: Featuring a picturesque course that takes runners alongside the waters of Utica’s Canal Trail, the National Distance Running Hall of Fame Half Marathon and 5K offers a race that fits the organization it benefits – a race with several challenging stretches, but also one that welcomes runners of all abilities. The race, organized by the Utica Road Runners club, benefits the National Distance Running Hall of Fame, which was established in Utica in 1998 to honor the athletes who have brought fame and recognition to the sport.

The race – which also includes a 5K and a half-marathon relay – is a hilly one, ranging in elevation from about 390 feet to 440 feet above sea level at its highest points. The most significant hills, most of which unfold along the Canal Trail, occur between miles 2 and 3 and miles 10 and 11. The half-marathon follows an out-and-back course that begins near downtown Utica on Whitesboro Street, and then turns eastward onto North Genessee Street and northward onto the Canal Trail, the portion of the course on which most of the race is run.

18th Annual TORTOISE & HARE
Distance: 10K
Time: 9:00AM
Lower Buttermilk Falls State Park, Ithaca, NY
Race Notes: Borrowing from the fable this is a race for the slow as well as the fast. Speed alone is not the goal. The victory is in finishing the run. This is a good introduction to trail running (and to local trails ), and one of the few trail runs accessible by city buses from Ithaca [#4 North/South to Buttermilk Falls State Park — check this to verify present schedule]. The ONE MILE trail course is practically flat ; it can be completed by anyone regardless of age. The 10 K+ (10.8 km or 6.7 miles) is a trail run on a small scale (only ≈900’ of climb). It covers beautiful and varied terrain, the flat Larch Meadow Trail, the easy Bear Trail, the rolling Lake Trail, and only one long steep (400’ in ½ mile) hill. There are 3 restrooms on the course. Healthy refreshments at the finish line.
